Canva Bought Serif (Gulp)
Serif is the company that makes Affinity Designer, favourite vector editor. I snapped up a (very affordable) perpetual license for the whole Affinity suite last year and I’ve been loving it since. After kinda-sorta wanting a better vector editor for years, my hand was forced by the graceless SaaSification of Vectornator Linearity Curve.
So you can imagine my dread when Figma, Australia’s largest SaaS startup, announced that they bought Serif last week. Craig Crannell captured the mood well…
You can already picture a press release stating that Canva has made the “difficult decision” to move Affinity apps to subscriptions, and a “hard choice” to move development from Nottingham to Canva HQ in Australia.
I’m no enshittification expert, but if this ain’t it then we need a new word.
